Press Release - Trapping of Coyotes

Posted: 2018-12-24

Trapping of Coyotes

On Dec. 19th, 2018, I received an e-mail concern from a resident regarding trapping of coyotes in St. Andrews. I immediately contacted our CAO to get information on this concern as I was unaware traps were set or even where they are located.

In the summer of 2018, with previous council, we were advised there had been complaints of coyote sitings near where children were walking to the school bus pickups in the morning. Another incident had been reported that a resident witnessed her dog taken by a coyote. Because the complaints included concern for personal safety of people in addition to domestic animals, Council supported our By-law Enforcement and CAO to gather more information. As a Councillor at the time, that was the last I heard of the issue.
I am so grateful this resident brought my attention to this matter, which I immediately investigated.

I have received confirmation on December 22, 2018 that the trapper has removed all traps and signs from the RM of St. Andrews.

On a personal note, I am an animal lover and a member of Pawed Pals rescue and I, as the New Mayor and the new council, take this situation very seriously. It is so unfortunate this occurred and moving forward communication will be greatly improved. Any future issues with wildlife concerns should be forwarded to the RM Office, who will be instructed to inform myself or the Deputy Mayor immediately.

R.M. of St. Andrews
